Back to School for Young Mothers: A Season of Hope
All women have significant life changes and stressors with pregnancy. For young women who have not completed secondary education and/or college, these changes and stressors are often magnified by additional factors. All pregnant women and mothers face lifestyle changes, health risks, physical changes, and some component of stress to their overall well-being. Pregnancy is a total mind, body, and soul transformation. A woman is no longer just herself surviving in the world. Now add onto this the difficulties that young mothers without support face with housing, financial responsibilities, employment, healthcare beyond the medical office, nutrition, sleep, and overall safety, along with high school or college attendance and homework requirements. This is further compounded once the baby enters the world, with feeding schedules, potential breast milk pumping needs, lack of sleep for the mother, childcare, and the need to manage extra appointments. All these challenges combined can feel especially overwhelming with the daily demands of building a stable future for themselves and their child.
Behind these challenges are powerful stories of determination and resilience. This is not an easy life, but these young women keep pushing forward and doing the best they can. Life may not be ideal, but they want to bring their child into the world in a way they feel is best. A young mother may be forced to give up some of her own goals and dreams, and sometimes this includes their ability to obtain an education at the time. They may need assistance with healthcare, food, childcare, and more. Many options are available via government programs, but they are often still not enough. These programs help cover the basic needs, but do not address every possible challenge or even the past and current stories of trauma that the mother is holding during this time.
A young mother may begin her day preparing herself and her child for daycare before attending any classes, completing assignments, or studying late after the child is asleep. Sleep may be limited, childcare often requires extra coordination, and mom’s needs are often put aside before unexpected situations can quickly disrupt even the most organized schedule. While most students worry about exams, deadlines, future educational goals, and extracurricular activities, young mothers must often manage those responsibilities alongside the basic needs of taking care of their unborn or born child, including meals or nursing, appointments, working a job, and financial concerns, along with the physical drain and mental impact of caring for a child along with oneself.
Living at Mother’s Refuge helps to provide support during this critical stage of life. These young mothers are surrounded by other peers facing many of the same struggles. This safe and structured environment is not just providing the basics. Mother’s Refuge is providing support, instruction, and empowerment to these young women as they navigate the many challenges. They are provided housing, parenting education, life-skills training, mentorship, counseling, spiritual support, and connections to community resources. Having supportive adults and peers nearby can remind a young mother that she does not have to navigate all the challenges of pregnancy and motherhood alone.
Education plays an essential role in helping young mothers create greater opportunities for themselves and their children. This includes formal education such as high school, college, or other career training programs. In addition, education is not just formal education but also spiritual education, life skills, and the holistic education provided by other adults around them. Completing this comprehensive education helps strengthen confidence and open doors to future employment and independence. These women have a greater chance of success and benefit greatly from flexible educational options, reliable childcare, transportation assistance, academic support, trauma-informed mental health support, and adults who believe in their true potential. Teachers, counselors, group home staff, healthcare professionals, volunteers, and community organizations can all make a meaningful difference by recognizing the unique challenges these students face without judgment and with inclusive love and empathy. These young mothers attending high school or college are developing lifelong skills. These skills will be their tools throughout life. The support they receive will meet their essential needs, but even greater gifts come from the love shared in faith and hope for these young women. Their path may look different from that of their peers, with many detours, roadblocks, and missed opportunities, but different does not mean less promising or less potential. With support, these young mothers have the potential to move forward on their unique paths, bringing their life stories, skills, and gifts to our world.
Every baby born, degree earned, and difficult day overcome represents progress toward a brighter future and potential hope for others, too. By providing support, opportunity, and belief, entire communities can empower young mothers to face their challenges and uncover the blessings. The support provided to these mothers and their children is enveloped in faith, hope, and love, bringing strength and perseverance as they follow the road God opens for their future.
